Without bees, there would be no human life on this planet. Around 85% of crops grown for human consumption depend on their existence – and although they’ve been here for over 30 million years, we’re learning more every single day about the unique things the world’s 20,000 species of bee contribute to this planet. But so much of it is far beyond our understanding.
These are just some of the reasons that we’re obsessed with everything and anything bee related. These incredible little creatures are the only insects on the planet that create food that humans can eat – and they spend their entire lives working ridiculously hard to produce around 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey.
Another under-appreciated product that bees make is beeswax, which they use to build honeycomb cells inside their hives. When beekeepers extract honey from their hives, they scrape the beeswax cap off the cells, and this can then be filtered and turned into array of natural products – including beeswax candles. This truly incredible substance never goes bad – and can be heated and reused again and again.
On my hunt for alternative, natural products, I came across Bee Fresh – a New Zealand company that makes beeswax deodorant. Although I’ve never really been one for roll-on, I thought I’d give it a try.
First things first, it smells amazing – both in the tube and on your skin. It has a light, fresh lemony scent, with a hint of beeswax and honey. It’s also amazing not to have to avoid the cloud of chemicals that form when spraying on store bought deodorant. On top of this, it feels great, and not wet and sticky like other roll-ons, and I feel better knowing that I’m not smothering my pits with potentially harmful substances.
As if using 100% organic natural ingredients wasn’t enough – Bee Fresh goes one step further, as its packaging is also eco-friendly and entirely compostable. They come in either a paste in a tub for those with hairy underarms, or a push up balm, which is smooth and firm. Both of us have been using the tube and we’re really loving it – and I can’t imagine we’ll ever go back to our old ways. Both paste and tube formulas are 60g and should around last two to three months. Get yours from Bee Fresh here.
